The Gambia – 50 Dalasi

The Gambia, or Gambia officially “The Republic of The Gambia” is a small country in West Africa. Gambia is the smallest country on mainland Africa, surrounded by Senegal except for a short coastline on the Atlantic Ocean in the west. Gambia gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1965 and joined the Commonwealth of Nations.

The Dalasi is the currency of the Gambia. It is subdivided into 100 Bututs. The Dalasis was adopted in 1971. It replaced the Gambian pound.

Banknotes currently in circulation are 5, 10, 25, 50 & 100 Dalasis.

Here is a note of 50 Dalasis that I found in Amsterdam in June 2012 and added to my collection. Beautiful multicolored note with Hoopoe bird in the center. A woman in the right with here beautiful cultural head and neck dressing. The back of the notes shows the famous stone circles at Wassu. Watermark is a crocodile’s head and the note is approximately 154 mm x 78 mm in size. The note is not dated and based on the  signature it is probably from the 2006 issue.
